Filippi shoes: between present and future – Filippi Boats

Filippi is expected to launch its new rowing shoes in the spring of 2022. A new world and a brand-new shoe, with a series of updates that will leave speechless. The new item's features, focused on comfort and performance, will be unveiled in the following weeks. Today we help you discover some adjustments on the current model less advertised but that you will find again on the next shoes.

The buttonhole that makes a difference

We will leave unchanged a detail that no other rowing shoe manufacturer has so far been able to offer. Do you remember the semi-hidden plate inside the front of the sole? There are two, one on each side, located under the buttonhole explicitly created in the outer sole.

So far, these plates have been made of 316 stainless steel but, starting from the first supply of our new shoes, they will be made of titanium for weight reasons (we can gain 20 grams for each pair of shoes) and for eliminating any form of oxidation.

This remarkable and perhaps little known buttonhole allows an additional 2-centimeter range, up or down, to enable the athlete to obtain the optimal depth (the distance between the internal heel and the seat) of the heel once you have checked all the possibilities of adjusting the position of the shoes using the pins on the main platform. As a standard, the shoes are placed in a safe position in the lowest point of the buttonhole to avoid rubbings at the bottom of the cockpit.

In exceptional cases (i.e., for very large shoes), fixing the shoes according to the required depth could cause the heel to be way too close to the bottom of the hull cockpit, preventing the athlete from moving advantageously. In this case, the main benefit is to be able to move the shoes up to 2 centimeters and with millimetric excursions, as long as you do not go too far beyond the end of the platform. To move the shoe, simply use a screwdriver to loosen the 5x10 screws that secure the shoes to the place, then move it in the desired direction before tightening the screws again.

Thicknesses that improve performance

Different heel wedges for each group of sizes are supplied with the current shoe: they serve as a finishing touch to the shoe's profile and allow you to reach the support of the carbon board rapidly.

Additional wedges are available for sale and can be applied under the toe and in the back of the shoe sole, with three different inclinations to enhance the comfort and performance of the athlete.

Here are some tips for better use:

  • The adjustment plate under the sole allows tiny adjustment to reach the desired depth inside the boat.
  • Different toes angles can be achieved by reducing or increasing the toe to heel distance and fixing the soles in the desired settings.
  • It’s possible to change the shoe position to reach optimum comfort by simply removing the foot stretcher, releasing the screws and fixing the soles in the new desired position.
  • Use the wedges to change foot angles on the foot stretcher: put the front wedge (6°) under the forefoot and fix it to the shoe sole. Put the rear wedges (4°or 7°) under the heel and fix it to the shoe sole. The wedges can be purchased individually.
  • When using the wedges, you can easily find the recommended angles 6° in front and 4° in the rear for every shoe size by living free the four central deformation lines under the sole.
  • Wedges can be used or not, according to what the athlete feels comfortable with.
  • Warning! After the new settings are completed, you might need to adjust your stretcher to achieve your desired line of work.
